The house dust mite is a cosmopolitan guest in human habitation. Dust
mites feed on organic detritus such as flakes of shed human skin and
flourish in the stable environment of dwellings. In nature they are killed by
micro-predators and by exposure to direct sun rays. Dust mites are
considered to be the most common cause of asthma and allergic
symptoms worldwide. The enzymes they produce can be smelled most
strongly in full vacuum cleaner bags.
There are three main factors which the dust mites need in order to successfully survive.
1) FOOD - Skin Flakes - Can be found all around our homes but high concentrations are found in bedrooms.
2) TEMPERATURE- They thrive in temperatures of more than 20 degrees centigrade.
3) HUMIDITY – Approximately 60 – 80% .
The female can lay up to 100 eggs and each mite can live for between 60 - 120 days and they have no natural
enemies
They leave droppings everywhere they go. Their droppings contain left-over enzymes which the mites use to digest
the skin dust. It is these enzymes which are the most important part of mite dust in causing asthma and other
allergic diseases.

It is possible to see a dust mite under a magnifying glass, when the subject is well lit and placed on a black
background. A typical house dust mite measures 420 µm in length and 250 to 320 µm in width. Both male and
female adult house dust mites are globular in shape, creamy white and have a striated cuticle. A member of the
phylum Arthropoda, post-larval stages of house dust mites have eight legs; larval stages have six legs. Dust mites
can be transported airborne by the minor air currents generated by normal household activities.
