Neem in Medicines
One of the Sanskrit names for neem is ‘Yavan Priya’ and according to classical Unani
scholars it means the beloved of Muslims. Ali Gilani in ‘’Sharh-e-Mufridat  Al-Qannon
has named neem as ‘Shajar-e-Mubarak’ , the blessed tree because of its highly
beneficial properties. People in India also think very high of this tree. Persian
scholars have used the name ‘Azad darakht’ for neem. Its botanical name,
Azadirachta indica is evidently derived from Persian.
All parts of neem, viz roots , stalk, stem, leaves, flowers, fruit seeds, bark, gum and
neem oil have therapeutic uses. Hakim Mohd. Husain Alavi (1874) in ‘Makhazan-al-
advia’ states that fresh leaves are more commonly used as/in drug(s) than any other
part. The dried leaves have also been used though these are not as effective. The
temperament (mizaj) of neem is moderately “hot’ and ‘wet’ to the first degree.
Different parts of neem are antiseptic and blood purifier of a very high order. These
are considered useful in the treatment of boils, leprosy, syphilis, septicaemia, vitiligo,
eczema, pityriasis etc., as well as in some others
skin diseases.
